Institutional Program of Internationalization

Established by Ordinance No. 220, of November 3, 2017, the Institutional Program for Internationalization of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) and Research Institutes of Brazil (CAPES-PrInt) aims to foster the construction, implementation and consolidation strategic plans for the internationalization of institutions, stimulate the formation of international research networks with a focus on improving the quality of academic production linked to graduate courses, expand actions to support postgraduate internationalization, promote the mobility of teachers and students, encourage the transformation of participating institutions in an international environment, and integrate other actions to promote CAPES to the internationalization effort.

For its conception, researches were carried out in the Sucupira Platform and through questionnaires sent to Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) and invited renowned Brazilian researchers, with international insertion, who shared ideas with the main actors of the national graduation for the elaboration of a program that really met the needs of HEIs and Brazilian graduate programs. One of the main conclusions drawn in this discussion was that the main actors in the area of science, technology, innovation and higher education in Brazil should take the lead in the internationalization process of Brazilian research. Thus, the idea is to encourage institutions to define their own internationalization strategy in the thematic areas in which the institution stands out and is dedicated to acting.

The internationalization of Brazilian universities, the goal of this program, is a necessary process to enable higher education to become responsive to the challenges of a globalized society. It must be understood as a means and not as an end in itself. Internationalization is the integration of an international, intercultural or global dimension in the purpose, functions or delivery of higher education, with special attention to graduate courses. In this context, CAPES-PrInt makes a fundamental contribution for Brazil to fully realize its potential regarding the quality of research carried out at the national level and the interface between scientific production and technological innovation with international insertion.
